Today on the blog, I talk to Payton Moran, about the fundamentals of why we sometimes struggle with money mindset as entrepreneurs and some top tips on how to start healing our relationship with money.
Money mindset is sneaky! We don’t realize all these feelings we carry around about money, and how they effect us making money. Especially for those of us who come from 9-5’s – having the responsibility of making our own living can be a lot of pressure and it brings out a lot of self-sabotaging behaviors.
I think it all stems from the forming of our money story. Even though we all grow up differently, we all receive some type of money trauma from our past. How we think and feel about money influences the decisions we make when we’re trying to make more money, or start a business and bear responsibility for our own income.
Sure! So, Break Up With Broke is a free 3 day mini course that will help you lay the foundation of shifting your relationship with money. I created BUWB because I realized there was a disconnect between why women in business weren’t profiting, and why they thought they weren’t.
Similarly, this is how my coaching journey began. After running multiple businesses, and freelancing, I saw a real gap in the type of coaching women in business were pursuing, versus what they needed. Your mindset around making money can be a silent killer to your business!
I think the single most important thing you can do is to make the decision to confront your relationship with money. Decide that you’ll dive into your money story, and analyze how you really feel about making money or running a business. There are definitely important strategies like creating systems for money management, and building a squad that supports you in your journey to wealth- but it all starts with that decision that we’re no longer going to ignore these negative feelings about money.
Honestly, the creation of my coaching business. I transitioned from the financial services industry, and it took me longer than I’d like to admit identifying how the industry didn’t align with me. I had to break promises to myself by moving on from that business and pivot as an entrepreneur. Doing that was a huge feat for me, and I’ve enjoyed finding my ideal clients along the way and who I can truly help.
Definitely. I think the main reason for that is because many women are made to feel shameful, and incapable when it comes to money so we tend to think that we’re the only ones that feel these certain feeling about money. When I confirm that all of these feelings are normal, and many of us struggle with money blocks people tend to
I think the most common things I see are that rich people are greedy, or unethical. If you didn’t come from money, and most entrepreneurs don’t, then you probably have a very negative view of those who are wealthy. This can be detrimental to your success – your subconscious will not let you become something you dislike! I also see a lot of women struggling with the overworked & underpaid block; they feel hesitant to raise prices, and give things away or undervalue their work. It’s all too common!
A few women come to mind! I worked with a life coach who had completely put her business on pause because of the resistance she was feeling about being capable of managing her own income. We worked together for a month, and she was able to move through that in order to start her business up again. I’ve also helped a few entrepreneurs in some unconventional ways- accepting that it’s okay- and ethical- for them to make money allowed them to make decisions like niching to their true passion, talking through hard conversations with a partner, or sitting down and reminding themselves of their abundance.
Of course, my most powerful case study will always be myself! I’ve transformed from someone who wouldn’t even check her credit or bank account, into someone who is meeting financial goals and helping other women have epiphanies about what’s holding them back from more.
I think I bring a really unique aspect to money- I’m a little bit of everything! I start my clients off with all mindset work – working through money blocks, exploring their story, raising their prices etc. But I move into strategy too! With many money coaches you either get a really “woo woo” message, or a very strategical approach. But I think mastering money warrants both! So yes, I can answer all those boring budgeting & investing questions you have after we move through your resistance to just start!
